The new tax regime has empowered the Nigeria Revenue Service (and the sub-national tax authorities) to track incomes derived from taxable digital assets and offshore investments for tax purposes, by leveraging tax information exchange agreements signed with foreign tax authorities and bilateral investment treaties signed between Nigeria and other countries.
As tax authorities begin deployment of their income-tracking powers under the new tax system, there have been widespread concerns about the possible abuse of these powers in light of the privacy right guaranteed by the Constitution and data protection safeguards provided in the Nigeria Data Protection Act and relevant regulations.
