It’s worse than this. Since WWII crop breeding programs select for varieties that require more nitrogen fertilizer to increase crop yields. Heirloom varieties can produce crops with lower nitrogen levels compared to the modern varieties.

We are working every day on solutions to address the rising costs of fertilizer.

Bottom line: we cannot rely on the foreign supply of fertilizers from adversarial nations like Russia and China. We need to reshore and bolster domestic fertilizer production to secure national farm independence.

Here’s what we’ve already done:

✅ Added phosphate & potash to the 2025 Critical Minerals List  
✅ Suspended the Jones Act for 60 days
✅ Expanded fertilizer exports from Venezuela  
✅ Eliminated Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) requirements  
✅ Working with great American companies like CF who are deferring maintenance to keep costs as low as possible
✅ Working to make fertilizer production permitting easier

@Matt_Bracken48 I used to go pheasant hunting in W OK. Sometimes in the evening we’d come across a porcupine, the bird dogs would get cocky and, get a face full of quills. Most of the dogs would learn the lesson. Once was enough for them. One buddy had a German shorthair that never did learn

@BrianRoemmele I came up on a full grown diamond back one time in western Oklahoma. Coiled up it was big around as a tire. Its head was almost as big as a deck of cards. I’ll admit I got weak in the knees!
