n our little spot n N Derbyshire, the winds have been much stronger than Eunice overnight, and the rain yesterday was torrential. Just glad the fields slope down to a stream (which looks much more like a river today).
A friend has told me that they used to have home slaughter for their pigs - someone came to the farm slaughter them. Is this legal (UK) and if so how do I find someone? Our use only! Not to sell.
@SmallholdersUK Thank you!! We had to find something to do with the so that it pays for itself, and growing our own hops & eventually brewing ticked all the boxes!!
@SmallholdersUK If we didn’t both work we couldn’t afford to live here - & if we had moved when our children were younger I wouldn’t have been able to work as much as I do now. We have so much to do at weekends because we’re so busy in the week, but if we weren’t busy we couldn’t pay the bills
Today I have walked over 10,000 steps pushing a wheelbarrow full of well rotted horse muck. - and I think I’ll be doing the same every day til after New Year!! It’s going….slowly…!!
Pros and cons of having animals for meat, please. Thinking pigs, turkeys, chickens….just for us, not to sell. It would reduce how much meat we eat as we’d only eat what we’ve produced.
I am a private tutor & also have contracts with training companies so I didn’t take school holidays this year & only had AL when we were away. If we’re going to get everything done here that needs to done, I need to be away from the ‘proper job’ so I can get on with smallholding.
Busy two days outside shifting muck (4 years’ worth!) & still more to move next week. I am so tired, I’m sure I’ll really ache tomorrow (paperwork, marking & CPD day) but it’s been so enjoyable! I need to make sure I take all the school holidays so I can catch up on yard work 1/
