CMPAC welcomes Prime Minister Mark Carney’s statement condemning the mistreatment of Canadian civilians aboard the #flotilla, along with the summoning of the Israeli Ambassador and the emphasis Canada having already sanctioned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

However, we call on PM @MarkJCarney and Foreign Affairs Minister @AnitaAnandMP to take further diplomatic, legal, and consular action in response to the mistreatment and detention of Canadian citizens aboard the Global Sumud flotilla.

1-Canada must direct its embassy and consular officials to pursue all available legal, diplomatic and consular avenues to protect detained Canadians, improve their conditions, and secure their immediate release. Canadians participating in a lawful humanitarian mission delivering life-saving aid to Gaza must not be subjected to arbitrary detention, mistreatment, intimidation, or political retaliation.

2-While Canada has publicly condemned the actions of the Israeli government and summoned the Israeli Ambassador to Canada, should these violations against Canadian citizens continue, Canada must be prepared to pursue escalate diplomatic measures, including the expulsion of the ambassador or severing diplomatic ties.

3-Emerging footage documenting the conduct of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, toward flotilla activists is deeply disturbing and unacceptable. CMPAC therefore calls on Canada to expand or add additional sanctions against Ben Gvir.

4-Canada must further support pathways toward legal accountability against Ben Gvir for violations committed against Canadian citizens, including waiving any applicable immunities that obstruct affected families from pursuing legal action and prosecutions.

Canada has a clear responsibility to protect its citizens abroad and uphold international legal principles, including the protection of civilians engaged in lawful humanitarian activities from arbitrary detention, mistreatment, unlawful interference, or political intimidation. #cdnpoli
