Initiating online classes without proper planning could be self-destructive, alleges Mia Golam Porwar

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former MP Mia Golam Porwar issued a statement today, April 2, expressing strong condemnation and protest against the government’s imprudent decision to conduct online classes three days a week in schools and colleges of all metropolitan cities.

In the statement, he said, “The decision taken at a coordination meeting held at the Secretariat on March 31 to introduce online classes three days a week in educational institutions in Dhaka and other metropolitan cities is highly undesirable and short-sighted. Using the excuse of an energy crisis, the government is imposing online classes on young students, which is part of a deep conspiracy to render the nation intellectually deficient.

He further stated, “An online-dependent education system exposes students to multiple forms of harm. Due to the high cost of internet access, many poor students become excluded from educational activities. Under the pretext of online classes, the increased use of smartphones puts young students at risk of device addiction and moral degradation. As classroom-based learning is disrupted, students’ regular study habits are severely affected. In such a situation, introducing an online-based education system amounts to knowingly destroying students’ academic lives.

He also said that the impact of online-based education on Bangladeshi students during the COVID-19 period was reflected in the ‘National Student Assessment 2022’ report. It showed that primary-level students failed to achieve grade-appropriate competencies in Bangla and mathematics. Even students from poorer and remote regions like Mymensingh lagged far behind those from relatively affluent areas. Surveys by organizations including UNICEF revealed that during the period of online classes, both dropout rates and child labor increased.

Mia Golam Porwar added that attempts to implement a new curriculum in 2023 without proper planning, the disruptions during the July movement, subsequent instability in educational institutions, and the lack of effective education reforms have meant that the damage inflicted on students and the education system during COVID-19 has yet to be overcome.

In this context, when meaningful reforms are most needed, returning to online classes will not bring any benefit to students.
He further said that it is never acceptable to destroy students’ futures under the pretext of an energy crisis.

If there truly is an energy crisis, why is the burden being placed on young students while other sectors, including state luxuries, continue to operate? Targeting only educational institutions is essentially part of a broader conspiracy to weaken the intellectual foundation of the nation. The government must give the highest priority to the education sector and take effective and responsible measures. Otherwise, it will have to bear the responsibility.

We call for the immediate withdrawal of this irrational decision and urge ensuring regular, in-person classes for all students.”
