@TheNoisyTrunk I wasn't actually, I couldn't have been more literal - but ok.
Ha ha and yeah - in your wedding analogy, I would think the muttering uncle is more interesting.
Who's the 'we' in this account exactly btw?
This wildly misleading tweet, and the mostly hateful replies, is like entering an alternate version of reality.
If anybody is interested in the truth behind this claim, and what that Swedish poll actually asked, I'll go through it.
Probably banging my head against a wall. ๐
@Mr_Fireside That's the point, every historical figure has foibles and historiographical perspectives. I'm just saying there's valid perspective in people seeing him as a symbol for colonization which had undeniable negative impacts on millions. That's if you're being 'unpolitical' about it
@Mr_Fireside But moreover in a big picture it's an understandable argument he was advancing science and exploration, while also being understandable he's a symbol for broader effects of colonisation
@Mr_Fireside Eg on his 3rd voyage:
'Edgar described how one Tongan prisoner who received 72 lashes and then was dealt โa strange punishmentโ by
"scoring both his Arms with a common Knife by one of our Seamen Longitudinally and transversly [sic], into the Bone"'.
This is a decent chronicle of key moments in @triplej's history and, by extension, Kingsmill's.
The cultural impact of both is made clear, as are the challenges facing triple j. imho losing RK makes those even harder to overcome
