Captain Jerry Agbeyegbe, 1955–2004:

The Pilot Who Spoke Truth to Power.

Captain Jerry Eyituoyo Agbeyegbe was a well-known Nigerian pilot, aviation safety advocate, and founder of the Nigerian Aviation Safety Initiative.

He was called the conscience of Nigeria’s aviation industry because he openly pushed for safer skies and government accountability.

Born in Delta State, he began flying lessons at Lagos Flying Club in 1974, then trained in the US and graduated from the FAA Academy in Oklahoma.

As president of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, he constantly fought against weak infrastructure, poor safety standards, and bad government policies.

He was killed on October 12, 2004, at 49, on the Alapere section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Authorities first said it was a car accident, but an autopsy showed he had been shot, with bullets and pellets found in his chest and lungs. Many still believe his murder was planned to silence his advocacy.

Someone DMed me today and begged me to raise my voice because he saw my bio, my tweets, and how many of my posts have been going viral. Something serious is happening in Bagega, Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The person sent me voice notes, pictures, and videos as evidence, and honestly, I was shocked by what I saw.

This issue deserves urgent attention, but I also have to think about my safety and my family. We all know the risks involved when speaking about banditry and insecurity. I’m not afraid, but my family cannot afford to lose me.
