Talking about Portugal today.
Roberto Martínez has moved away from using attacking midfielder profiles and is now playing with two natural wingers, sacrificing Bernardo Silva and João Félix in favour of Rafael Leão and Pedro Neto.
I understand the reasoning. Against stronger opposition, having two fast wingers can be beneficial in transition, especially in matches where Portugal will have less possession. It also suits Bruno Fernandes, who is at his best when he has runners to play in behind.
But then comes Cristiano Ronaldo's role as a false 9. He's no longer a real threat with the ball to feet, so centre-backs aren't following him when he drops deep. As a result, you're not achieving the main objective of a false nine: dragging centre-backs out of position to create space for the wingers to attack in behind.
In that case, it would probably make more sense to use a player who is naturally suited to the false nine role, someone like João Félix or Bernardo Silva, who can genuinely threaten opponents by receiving between the lines.
As I've said before, I don't think Cristiano Ronaldo is a problem for Portugal. But using him in this specific role makes less sense.

My biggest flex is I can close my eyes & sleep in 3 minutes (most likely less), no insomnia, no lack of sleep, no overthinking, nothing, I want to sleep, I sleep.
Lol some people wake up and from morning til evening their work is to judge other people’s level of religiousness, marriages, dressing etc. I wonder how they’re not exhausted living like that. Focus on what will help your life because everyone has areas to work on.
