The last two weeks have involved an in-depth exploration of the fintech and banking space, focusing on real-world ledger systems and the bookkeeping models utilized in modern financial platforms.

Inspired by Stripe’s architecture and an open-source ledger engine.

I developed a fully functional, automated ledger system using #MySQL and #NestJS. This system features native support for #crypto transactions, including swaps, cross-chain transfers, and #P2P movements.

The other day, I shared how I used my @SudoAfrica co-branded card to make a #contactless #payment at an agent outlet. Someone asked:

🗣️ “Is Sudo some sort of Mobile Bank App?”

I replied:
“Sudo is a payment instrument issuer.”

Here’s what that means:

1️⃣ Then:
We started by helping Financial Institutions issue contact-based ATM cards for their customers.

2️⃣ Now:
We’ve taken it further — issuing over 150,000 contactless (NFC-enabled) ATM cards. These cards serve multiple purposes: debit cards, prepaid cards, credit cards, and loyalty cards.

3️⃣ For Merchants & Agents:
We’ve empowered POS agents and merchants to turn their mobile phones into tools for payment collection. Yes, your phone can now act like a POS terminal!

Growing up, many of us believed that the 3 curved lines on ATM cards meant international payments. In reality, they signify #contactless #payments — a fast, seamless way to pay without physically inserting your card into a terminal.

Yesterday at Kuje New Modern Market’s Trade Fair, I tried to pay using my @SudoAfrica co-branded card. Sadly, the POS agents didn’t know how Tap-to-Pay works and seemed hesitant. I left with a mission: to spread awareness.

Today, I decided to try again at Kilimanjaro. After placing my order, I approached the cashier. Here’s how the conversation went:

💳 Cashier: “Please give me your card.”
🗣️ Me: “No need.”
😕 Cashier: “Why?”
🗣️ Me: “You see these 3 curved lines on the POS machine? It means the terminal accepts contactless payments. My card has the same symbol, so it supports Tap-to-Pay.”
😯 Cashier: “Really? I’ve never seen it done before.”
🗣️ Me: “Just enter the amount, select ‘Current’ as the card type, and I’ll tap the card.”

The cashier, now curious, followed my instructions.

On the first try, the terminal displayed ‘Failed to Read Card Data.’
I smiled and said, “Okay, let’s try again.”

On the second attempt, the system prompted for my PIN. I entered it, and — Ta-da! Payment successful in less than 10 seconds! 🚀

The cashier was surprised and impressed. It felt great to show how fast, secure, and convenient contactless payments are.

Takeaway?
Tap-to-Pay is here to make payments simpler, but many people — including POS agents and merchants — still don’t know how it works. It’s up to us to spread the word and embrace this modern solution.
