Following on from my meeting with Defence Minister @rajnathsingh Sb, I met with Civil Aviation minister @RamMNK to discuss the proposed closure of Srinagar airport in October. We are working on possible alternatives to minimise the disruption & maintain a basic flight schedule as was done in the past when the airport closed for similar reasons in 1998 & 2010.
Chief Minister met Hon’ble Union Minister for Civil Aviation Shri @RamMNK and raised concerns regarding the proposed closure of Srinagar Airport from 1-16 October for maintenance works.
Emphasising the importance of uninterrupted air connectivity to the Valley during the peak tourism season, he urged that the maintenance schedule be reviewed and, if feasible, shortened, phased, or shifted to a leaner travel window. The Chief Minister also suggested operating a limited number of civilian flights from Awantipora Air Base during the closure period to ensure continued connectivity for residents, tourists and businesses.

During the high-level meeting, a landmark decision was reached to introduce a commercial stoppage for the prestigious Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag. This strategic halt will significantly benefit commuters, tourists, and traders, providing a faster and more reliable transport link to one of Kashmir’s most prominent economic and cultural hubs.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep appreciation for the Indian Railways' transformative initiatives in J&K. He highlighted that the Vande Bharat service has fundamentally redefined travel between Jammu and Srinagar, cutting down travel time and offering world-class comfort to residents and visitors alike.
Beyond passenger movement, the Chief Minister underscored the growing, vital role of the expanded rail network in boosting J&K’s local economy. The seamless and robust movement of essential freight—particularly the region's famous fruits like Cherry, Apple and cement—through the railway network has drastically optimized logistics, reduced transit costs, and opened up larger markets for local farmers and industrialists.
