People are given a repentance period camped a ‘istitaba’ which was usually 3 days but could be extended to a month. If the person recanted, punishment was dropped

For female apostates they were given imprisonment and beatings until repentance rather than execution. However death was given as a punishment for women as well for refused to reconvert

For women if you leave Islam you lose all inheritance and lose custody of your children
