"Heard tell from o'er the ocean
of a saint, what was his name?
The last recourse of peaceful men,
He set himself aflame.
'Neath the power and steel that rule this world
does a rebel still remain.
My prayers go to the pit with him,
But they ain't worth much today."

@MilesMcCra27560@scottsantens You express a very common misunderstanding about UBI.
It's universal starting money, not universal extra money.
It's a nonzero floor beneath which nobody can fall, and upon which everyone can build.
It's redistributive, not a money printing operation.
There has been an increasing trend of police and soldiers attacking journalists in the midst of reporting conflict. One such incident is here. Please RT to support journalistic freedom and safety on the job.
This has always been and will always be one of the dumbest things to say in response to a policy that both Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek supported, and one that has existed in Alaska for over 40 years.
It's just a childish reply to pretty much everything, not just UBI.
7 years ago today, on October 11, 2016, my wife and partner Deia Schlosberg (@deiafilm) was thrown in a North Dakota jail for legally filming a climate protest action from a public road, kept in a cell for 3 awful days, and then charged with 45 years worth of felonies.
Shortly after, the #freedeia petition spearheaded by her film colleague @joshfoxfilm went viral, bringing attention and pro bono legal support (from the one and only Ron Kuby) first to her situation, and then to the other filmmakers who'd been arrested and/or charged for being present to film the #shutitdown climate action, in which 5 activists halted all oil sands flowing into the US from Canada for a day and set up years of legal battles arguing for the necessity defense as an avenue to address climate change with the urgency it demands.
It was a audacious and controversial demonstration, taken to show solidarity with the ongoing Standing Rock conflict at that time.
It was also about a week after I'd proposed to Deia, and we'd been waiting a little to tell people, so I had the unique experience of breaking the news (to her parents and then mine) the simultaneous news of our engagement and her imprisonment.
Interesting conversations, those.
Speaking of conversation, join us today at 9PT/12ET to talk about UBI, climate change, and activism.
We'll be joined by Deia, one of the activists Emily Johnston (@enjohnston, poet and lovely human being) - and possibly one or two more guests who played some part in that action 7 years ago and the ensuing legal battles - to discuss how it all went down as well as the role of economic security and agency in the ability to truly commit oneself to something like a direct action, to face jail time to stand up for what one believes is right.
The climate discussion is one that is often overlooked or underserved in the UBI space, and it's such a juicy and important one. I'm very excited about this Space, and the conversation we'll have.
On the agenda:
-activism
-freedom of the press
-consumerism
-the future of our environment
-UBI's potential role in it all
-whatever insightful thoughts and questions you have to bring to the comments, and to the second hour of the discussion, in which we open it up to speak directly with the audience
See you there!
As if we needed more evidence for #BasicIncome, here's more, this time from the Denver Basic Income Project (@denverbip) providing cash to hundreds of unhoused people for one year.

• Full-time employment increased
• Fewer visits to the emergency room
• Fewer nights spent in jail
• Reduced feelings of distress and anxiety
• Feel safer and more welcome where they sleep
• Greater sense of hope
