1959 Monty Stickles #80 Alternative Green Jersey

The first season of the Joe Kuharich era also brought the first major redesign in Notre Dame football uniform history.

In 1959, Notre Dame introduced UCLA-style sleeve stripes and sleeve numbers for the first time — a dramatic shift from the much more traditional uniforms the Irish had worn for decades. The green jerseys featured white sleeve stripes outlined in gold, creating one of the most distinctive looks in program history.

This jersey was worn by All-American end Monty Stickles, one of the great players of the era. Stickles earned All-America honors in 1959 and later became a first-round NFL Draft pick before enjoying a long professional career with the 49ers and Falcons.

Given both the historical significance of the uniform and the caliber of player associated with it, this may be one I eventually send to @MeiGray in hopes of getting photo matched.

c. 1961 #73 Home Jersey

One of the rarer jerseys in my collection and one of the very first few Notre Dame gamers I ever bought.

I actually won the auction for this jersey while sitting in the stands at a Notre Dame football game, nervously hoping the stadium WiFi would hold up long enough for my last-second bid to go through. Somehow it did.

This jersey comes from the Joe Kuharich era and features the distinctive gold-and-white sleeve striping Notre Dame wore in the early 1960s before the Ara Parseghian redesigns that followed a few years later.

It also appears the jersey was modified at some point to remove the original snap-front tail, another reminder of how these old gamers evolved over time through actual use.

In over 15 years of collecting, I’ve only seen one or two other examples from this style period surface publicly.

An incredibly tough era of Notre Dame jersey to find. ☘️🏈
