The ’60s and ’70s were different days. Those were the days when a man could express himself on his helmet.
They carried humor, attitude, frustration, memories, and sometimes a whole lot of “I’ve had enough.”
Every name, saying, drawing, pin-up, cartoon, or crazy piece of artwork told a little story about the Marine or soldier wearing it.

Some things have changed over the years… but the memories never do.

Rick Jolly’s interview and stopped when he said, “We couldn’t treat them all.” The part the recording leaves unstated is extraordinary: this Royal Navy doctor became the only serviceman decorated by both Britain and Argentina after the Falklands War.

At Ajax Bay, Jolly led the makeshift “Red and Green Life Machine”. His team treated more than 650 British and Argentine casualties and carried out around 210 operations. I find it deeply moving that nationality stopped mattering at the operating table.

Britain appointed him OBE. Argentina later awarded him the Order of May for the lives of its wounded that he helped save. I’m immensely proud that one of the clearest stories of British courage from that war was also a story of humanity towards the enemy.
