In 1915, a German princess was born with Down syndrome and, unusually for the time, she was never hidden from public view. Her name was Princess Alexandrine Irene of Prussia, the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Wilhelm and Princess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. At a time when disability was surrounded by stigma, her family chose a different path: openness and affection.

Nicknamed Adini, she was deeply loved. Her parents ensured that she received an education, was included in everyday life, and appeared at public events—something rare among royal families of that era. While many aristocratic households concealed relatives with disabilities, Alexandrine remained visible and respected. Her mother fought to secure her daughter’s dignity and her rightful place in society.

Alexandrine lived with her mother until 1954 and remained close to her family throughout her life. Hers was a life of quiet normality, warmth, and acceptance—a gentle challenge to the prejudices of her time. She passed away in 1980 at the age of 65, leaving behind not only public recognition but a legacy of compassion, courage, and familial love.
