@BenObeseJecty@NannaJanja Me too. I attended an Army Apprentice College (a long time ago), the apprentices were of very, very different backgrounds and, often, the best soldiers were the ones with the worst education outcomes.
The Conservatives cannot rebuild by chasing the 2019 coalition.
That coalition has gone.
The question now is simple: who is the party for?
If the answer is angry populism, it gets smaller.
If the answer is economic competence, serious government and broad centre-right values, there is a route back.
I sent this whatsapp message before the debate started this afternoon:
“I wonder if any opposition groups are planning to get the headlines by getting kicked out of the house for calling him a liar.”
No surprise that it was MPs from Reform and Our Party that chose to do the populist thing.
It is worth saying though that this corrosive complacency is not just from Labour. Conservatives have admitted in recent months that Politics in Britain is broken and this is part of the reason.
Blatant plug here, but this is why I set up my YouTube Channel Change from the Centre.

@BBCPolitics So now we know, Russia knows where some of our critical infrastructure is and they know that we know they know.
Now what are you doing to make us less vulnerable?
I recently did a couple of podcasts on my “Change from the Centre” Youtube channel about how to pick a candidate in the local elections. Links are here:

One of the comments I made was that you shouldn’t take everything that comes through your door at face value. Yesterday I was shown a great example. A leaflet from Lib Dem candidate Cath Gleadow, who is standing in St Ives South in Cambridgeshire says two things that definitely warrant closer examination.
Firstly, that Reform are responsible for “record high council tax rises”. Now imho Reform are not running good councils overall and they created some expectations around council tax that they have not met, but I struggle to see how someone can claim they have delivered record council tax rises.
Here is the Full Fact article about Reform Council Tax rises, which in fact shows that the highest council tax increases are from the Lib Dems:

The second claim is that “Labour and the Green Party came a distant 4th and 5th place at the recent County Council elections.” The vast majority of St Ives South District Council Ward is in the St Ives South and Needingworth County Council Division which was won by Labour’s Cllr Alex Bulat. In the other St Ives Division, North and Wyton, it was the Lib Dems who were 5th. What they may mean is that Labour and the Greens were 4th and 5th overall in the County Council elections. Of course, the overall result in the County Council elections has little, if any, relation to the District Council elections in Huntingdonshire. Even if they are talking about the county election results in the Hunts area, politics, including the standing of the greens has moved on a huge amount since then.
The point I make in my youtube videos about candidates is that they sometimes twist and stretch the truth beyond the point of reason in their leaflets and therefore you should not take anything they say at face value. This is probably the perfect example. Do you have any others, I’d love to hear about them?
