Been watching #TeachYouALesson on Netflix with so many breaks, for it gets too close for comfort.
I have to say, though, that it brings to surface a whole lot of conflicts from the world of educators, and every episode is discomfortingly relatable in more ways than one.
@santhiReads Yes, the most beautiful part is that the drama doesn’t take sides or agonise just one kind of stakeholder; it shows very pertinent gaps in the system that make it impossible sometimes to have a smooth and gainful teaching-learning environment.
“Yaadon mein hai wo hi nasha, jo maikhanon mein” is such a Wordsworthian thing to say!
I’m thinking of Tintern Abbey in particular:
“…thy mind
Shall be a mansion for all lovely forms,
Thy memory be as a dwelling-place
For all sweet sounds and harmonies…”

Not to take it away from Imtiaz Ali, but this pyaar mein sabse bada dukh bichhadna nahin, yaad reh jaana hai business was dealt with pretty well in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And, in the Kdrama world, good old Goblin/ Guardian captured the same sentiment. No?
@santhiReads Yes, yes. Imtiaz Ali does add his own signature touch to the film, which I loved, btw :)
Music and lyrics too 💜
Only, I read a bunch of social media stuff venerating this theme as though it originated with this film, which I thought was a bit of a stretch.
Felt like going back to this poem - Gulzar sa’ab’s response to Manto’s Toba Tek Singh, which is all I could think of while watching #MainVaapasAaunga.
The film was an echo chamber of so many partition voices, layers, expressions that one couldn’t help but feel so overwhelmed!
When the week gets tough, I imagine myself in the hills in peak winter with my girl-group sitting by the campfire, even as oh-so-handsome-in-green-jacket Shashi Kapoor serenades us to “khilte hain gul yahaan” along with cups of piping hot chai! 💜 😊

Please watch 90’s Jdrama #LongVacation for the vulnerability that Takuya Kimura’s close-ups add to Sena’s character - he’s the kind they don’t seem to make anymore.
While I adored Minami’s carefreeness, it was Sena’s sensitive, kind and softie vibe that I wanted to protect 🩶
