They were even walking around with weapons, which was terrifying for the artists. We also found out that some Japan Expo staff members were secretly taking photos of booths and reporting them. There was even one artist who sold a plush to an undercover staff member, who then came back with customs afterward
I’m not sure if it’s the same rumor, but there were people with bad intentions going around and putting up signs on artists booths accusing them of using AI and selling counterfeit merchandise. That booth was mainly shut down because of its Pokémon merch, which looked extremely similar to the original art style
One small clarification about the vtubers: I'm talking about the English/speaking vtuber scene!
Unfortunately, I'm not really part of the French vtuber community. I'm genuinely happy that French vtubers finally got some spotlight this year, that's great, but they're not the ones I personally follow <3
They kept teasing a huge vtuber area. In reality, there were only about four booths. They also heavily implied that there would be major agencies involved, but in the end, there was nothing.
Inviting English-speaking indie vtubers isn't even that difficult. If smaller conventions that have only existed for a short time, like vexpo, can do it, I don't see why one of the biggest conventions in Europe can't.
They know vtubers generate hype, and it feels like they take advantage of that by keeping everyone waiting until ticket prices go up about a month before the convention. Every year, they let people speculate, hoping for big announcements, and then nothing happens.....
To be honest, I've been thinking this for several years now, but this is it, I'm done... And I'm 200% serious!
Honestly, it's a good thing Japan Expo happens at the same time as DoKomi (next years), because I'm officially done with Japan Expo.
Every single year I hoped we'd finally get some VTubers, but they always kept everyone guessing until the last minute. This year's event was the last straw. The Artist Alley was filled with AliExpress resellers mixed in with actual artists, which completely ruined the atmosphere...
The organization was also an absolute nightmare.
So, goodbye. I won't be spending any more money there.
If I want to meet artists or see VTubers, I'll go to VExpo, DoKomi, or other conventions that actually care about artists and listen to the people who attend.
And charging helpers an extra fee just so they could enter with the person they were assisting, even though emails had already confirmed that bringing a helper was allowed, what was even the point? A helper who can't enter at the same time as the person they're helping defeats the entire purpose. Making some people pay anyway was incredibly disrespectful.
So thank you for the good memories from the first few years I attended. They were genuinely enjoyable, but that's the end for me. From now on, I'll be looking for my events and meetups elsewhere <3

@LandscapeSykes What shocks me is seeing staff members taking photos of artists' booths that are selling Pokémon merchandise and other fan merch just so they can report them. Then later, you have armed customs officers coming over to confront them (thats so scary??)
@Wiwi_keewi France is really good at this.....they come crawling out like rats lol And, funnily enough, they never seem to go after AliExpress stores selling body pillows featuring minors...they always target small artists instead.
⚠️ Nouvelle info, ils sont en personne lambda ou habillé en staff japan expo.
⚠️ New infos, they're in normal person clothing or in Japan Expo staff clothing.
Everything was taken away from the artist's stand.
Her work was torn from its display, thrown into black trash bags, and hauled away with the words, "It's our job."
Pleas, prayers, and desperate entreaties—at the very least not to destroy the materials—were all in vain.
