This reminds me of an exam I took back in medical school. They asked us to write a short note on almost every concept—about six in total.

I wrote short notes.

I submitted my booklet about an hour ahead of everyone. When I left the exam venue, I was surprised at how my classmates were wasting so much time answering short questions.

Later in the day, we got to meet. I asked someone why it took him so long to finish the exam, despite being one of the brightest in the class.

He explained how a tutorial they had a day earlier had cautioned them against writing short and brief responses to the question of “write a short note.” They were instructed to write as much as they could, starting from the introduction, definition, classification, MoA, etc.

I laughed. They don’t know English, I surmised.

We had an extended argument as to which approach was the best: writing the short note we were asked for, or providing an elaborate explanation.

There was only one way to find out: the exam outcome. So we waited.

When the time came… hmm!

Let’s just say I don’t want to disgrace people’s English teachers. English is English, but standard Oyibo English is not applicable (NA) to medical school exams.
