The 23% rate cut doesn't simply mean loan becomes "3.5% cheaper".
The real impact depends on how effective the rate cut is transmitted to banks' lending rate.

If transmission improves, borrowing & Investment could become more affordable and in turn boost economic activities.

If you have money in MMF, Treasury bill or fixed deposit, you may want to pay attention to this.

The CBN just cut its benchmark interest rate from 26.5% to 23%.

What does that mean for the ordinary Nigerian?

Money is becoming cheaper.

But don't expect your bank to call you tomorrow and say, “Oga, your loan is now 23%.” 😂

The MPR is a benchmark. The effect takes time to move through banks and the financial system.

Here's where you should pay attention:

1. Treasury Bills
T-bill yields have already started falling.
The 364-day T-bill was yielding 17.59% in August as at September 9, it had fallen to 16.62% at the auction.

So if you've been enjoying high returns on T-bills, don't assume today's rate will be tomorrow's rate.

2. Money Market Funds
MMFs invest in short term instruments like T-bills and bank placements.

When those instruments start paying less, MMF returns can eventually come down too.

Not necessarily tomorrow.
But as existing investments mature and are reinvested at lower rates, the fund's yield can change.

3. Your fintech savings
That 18%, 20% or 25% rate you're seeing?
Don't assume it's permanent.

As market rates fall, fintechs and banks may have less reason or ability to keep offering very high returns.

4. Loans
This is the other side.
If the lower MPR feeds through to lending rates, borrowing could eventually become cheaper.

But MPR falling to 23% does NOT mean your personal loan is now 23%.

Your bank still considers its funding cost, your credit risk, the type of loan and other factors.

And here's the part I really want you to understand: For the past few years, Nigerians have become accustomed to seeing very high returns on relatively low risk naira investments.

That environment can change.

So don't build your entire financial strategy around “This MMF is paying me 20%, so I'll just keep doing this forever.”

Rates move.
So you have to keep evaluating your investment and asking “What is my money invested in, why is it paying this return, and what happens if rates fall?”

The CBN has just given us a very clear signal that the era of very high interest rates may be changing.

And if you don't understand how interest rates affect your money, you may not notice the change until your returns have already fallen.

The key issue is transmission.

The CBN just cut its benchmark rate from 26.5% to 23%, a 350bp move nobody expected. Here's what it actually changes for you.

If you're an investor:

Lock in high yield fixed income now
T-bill and bond rates move with the policy rate. This cut signals yields are heading down. If you've been waiting to buy T-bills, this is the push to stop waiting.

Equities could get a lift
Lower rates make borrowing cheaper for companies. Often pushes investors out of fixed income and into stocks. Watch bank and consumer stocks in the coming weeks.

Existing bonds just got more valuable
If you already hold FGN bonds at the old, higher rates, their market value typically rises when new rates fall.

Money market fund yields will compress
Enjoy current MMF returns while they last. They'll trend down as the rate cut feeds through the system.

If you're a borrower:

Loans should get cheaper, eventually
Bank rates follow the MPR, but not overnight. Expect gradual relief, not immediate.

Better time to consider financing
If you've held off on a loan because rates were punishing, this is the direction you've been waiting for. Still shop multiple banks.

Mortgage and asset financing get more breathing room
Not dramatic overnight, but the trend now favors borrowers more than it has in over two years.

Bottom line: holding cash? Move on good fixed-income rates now before they fall further. Planning to borrow? Pressure is easing, but be patient, banks adjust slower than the CBN does.

Not financial advice.
