🇨🇦 As we navigate the challenges posed by U.S. tariffs against Canada, it's more important than ever to stand united as #TeamCanada! Our strength lies in supporting locally owned businesses and purchasing Canadian-made products. 🇨🇦
We asked our staff to spotlight a local, Ontario or Canadian-owned business that they love and have purchased from as part of our OCC #ShopLocal Campaign. Hear from our Graphic Designer, @WanChiaoHsu, who says Shoppe Clover is her favourite vintage shop in Toronto! “Larisa & Trevon, the passionate duo behind this Toronto-based small business, curate and restore timeless furniture that truly transforms a space. From vintage gems to custom-made treasures, every piece is crafted with care and built to last. They recently launched their in-house designed product line—just in time for their 4th anniversary!”
Stay tuned as we share more testimonials of our team's favourite spots that help keep our economy strong and our communities thriving. 💪

Opportunity is not a matter of chance. It’s a matter of choice!
Earlier this year, Canada's provincial and territorial chamber CEOs came together to call on Canada’s premiers to lead the way with immediate, comprehensive action to dismantle the internal barriers to trade within our country.
This call was echoed through the Chamber of the Federation (COF) Initiative and at a recent meeting with Premiers Ford and Houston and the Minister of Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources of Manitoba.
Interprovincial trade barriers are costing Canadian businesses and consumers billions of dollars annually, they’re driving up costs and limiting growth. It's time to act decisively and courageously.

Last week, the @OntarioCofC's Senior Manager of Public Affairs, @accarmonaosp, had the pleasure of attending and speaking at the @BarrieChamber’s Women in Business Awards.
In her remarks, Andrea shared insights from both her professional and personal journeys, emphasizing the urgent need to strengthen our commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion—especially as such policies face rollbacks south of the border.
Women make up 50% of the population, and they are a driving force behind Canada’s competitiveness. Women lead businesses, create jobs, and push industries forward. And at this moment, when our economy needs unity and resilience more than ever, we cannot afford to leave anyone behind.
Thank you to the entire Barrie Chamber of Commerce team for their dedication to the success of their local community, as well as their active role in championing policies that support Ontario’s prosperity.

Close to half of Ontario businesses expect to grow (46%) in 2025, up 10% from the same time last year.
That confidence, however, is industry-dependent. Industries that are more likely to expect their organizations to grow in 2025 include labour (63%), waste management (60%), and finance (59%).
When U.S. tariffs come into play, nearly half of the businesses surveyed (48%) are confident in their ability to adapt to ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) would like to congratulate Prime Minister-Designate Mark Carney as he assumes Liberal and national leadership at this time of uncertainty and opportunity.
“It’s time for Canada to replace complacency with competitiveness. This means a sustainable growth agenda that unleashes business investment, entrepreneurship, innovation, productivity, and growth – while continuing to invest in talent, infrastructure, and healthy communities. We urge Mr. Carney to pursue such an agenda in collaboration with other orders of government, and with the business community," says @DanTisch, President and CEO of the OCC.

Confidence is highest among #ONBiz in the mining sector (56%), which could be explained by the strong demand for critical minerals supported by Ontario’s Critical Minerals Strategy.
Other sectors among the most confident in Ontario’s future outlook include finance and insurance and administrative and waste management services (40%).

“When policies change overnight, trade agreements aren’t respected, and decision-making is not transparent, businesses cannot plan, invest, or grow”- @DanTisch@OntarioCofC
The @OntarioCofC's Vice-President of Public Affairs was in Washington, D.C. yesterday to address the Mayors and Industry Leaders Roundtable on a Strong U.S.-Canada Trade Relationship. Organized by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative (@GLSLcities) and the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI), Julie spoke about the impact of tariffs on our members, the OCC’s response, and what municipal leaders can do to support their #1 trade partner.
Julie was also joined by OBTLC members, Stephen Laskowski (OTA), Lauren Tedesco (@APMACanada), Andrew Hurd (@ACECOntario) and Greg Dunnett (@hamiltonchamber), who shared insights on the sectors they represent.
Last month, in response to ongoing tariff uncertainty from the U.S., the @OntarioCofC commissioned a Leger survey to assess the potential impact of tariffs on the Ontario business community.
In the next six to twelve months, 67% of those surveyed expect tariffs to negatively impact their own business. This primarily includes a decrease in sales/revenue (41%) and/or an increase in the cost of raw materials (40%).

“Unpredictability is a business killer,” says @DanTisch, President and CEO of the @OntarioCofC in a newly released statement in response to President Trump’s decision to exempt goods under CUSMA from 25% tariffs until April 2.
“When policies change overnight, trade agreements aren’t respected, and decision-making is not transparent, businesses cannot plan, invest, or grow. While this exemption offers temporary relief, it does not address the underlying issue: Businesses in both countries need stable, predictable, and strategic trade policies to remain competitive,” Tisch added.

As implemented tariffs and political shifts continue to impact Canadian businesses, the @OntarioCofC was pleased to host @melaniejoly, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, at our third Ontario Business Advisory Council meeting of 2025.
Our members had the opportunity to engage in a candid discussion on Canada’s response to U.S. trade actions, strategies for diversifying into global markets, and the importance of strengthening our economic resilience. Topics also included tax reform, tourism, talent strategy, and Arctic sovereignty.
A sincere thank you to Minister Joly and her team for taking the time to meet with our business leaders and to MNP for graciously hosting our event. These conversations are crucial as we navigate a rapidly changing global economy and work together to strengthen Ontario’s business community.
As the #IndispensablePartnerOfBiz, the @OntarioCofC conducts credible research and analysis to support our advocacy efforts.
