OJB is excited to announce a new release of our Maryland court case database, now with updated cases scraped daily from Case Search and two new case categories: the Appellate Court and Supreme Court of MD! Check it out now at https://t.co/wqfsfivt4s. A thread:
Imagine if we had a mayor at all. Such a person might at least have something to say - and maybe even might lift a finger! - about the fact that this is the same publicly funded agency that is now shielding their scanner transmissions from that public.
Whatever your site of struggle—abortion access, housing, education justice—the fact is that police are the ones standing in the way of our collective safety and well-being, not only through their violence and criminalizing people but also by looting our resources. #DefundPolice
TIMELINE of scanner transmissions that shows - hours before 30 were shot, 2 fatally - @BaltimorePolice were getting calls for help and knew Brooklyn Day was out of control, but stayed back. https://t.co/UrrcXWCohK "Foxtrot is overhead. We're not going in the crowd."
I *guarantee* this will happen in Baltimore. Ivan Bates’ regressive and incarceration-first policies only lead to worse outcomes, as all the evidence shows.
This is the state of government transparency in Baltimore. The city’s law department withdrew a public records request on my behalf without asking me based on an assumption that I no longer wanted them. I’ve been a journalist for a decade and can safely say this is a new one.
Ok, the rules:
1. Manipulation only. Drilling or other destructive stuff is not allowed.
2. You can only attempt to open it when the bookstore is open for business.
3. We split the mystery contents 50/50, unless it is gross or cursed, in which case you can have all of it.
Baltimore residents: Half our budget goes to Police & yet that $ doesn’t keep us safe so maybe let’s spend some of it on other approaches
City leaders: Lol no
BPD fails to keep us safe
BPD: This is residents’ fault for daring to even talk about taking away some of our money
BPD could so easily do certain things better, early intervention at potentially disastrous events is actually one of the easiest.
It’s not ghost guns, it’s not staffing, it’s not intelligence.
It’s cops not caring, cops resisting doing basic work, until being forced to.

I heard Baltimore’s mayor at that press conference explaining why the curfew didn’t work in this case even though research exists that says curfews don’t work and people said this to him.
UPDATED: Former Common Ground employees had been in the midst of a unionization effort when the shop closed and are exploring “the possibility of forming a worker-owned cooperative to save our jobs and Common Ground.”

This story—by me, @expandyourfocus, Vida Fye, and @steadynappin with illustrations by @egallagher_art— shows the limits of saying "300 murders" and how it is often used in bad faith by police and elected officials.

For example, there have been recent claims by the mayor and (soon-to-be former) commissioner about "record gun seizures." Besides gun seizures not helping reduce violence It is not true. https://t.co/UPgPWcjsZC
