My focus today at @NSTA was elementary science. I got to take a deep look at the pre-released @OpenSciEd curriculum, which has the potential to align our K-5 and 6-12 science programs, resulting in one cohesive K-12 curriculum.
What is phenomena-based sensemaking?
✅ Providing real-world events that motivate learning.
✅ Students' questions about those events drive learning.
✅ Materials provide structure and support to help students figure out the phenomenon.

"Students are willing to answer questions because they know they don't need to have the right answer. They know we'll figure it out together!"
Phenomena-based learning helps us meet our vision for science education because it,
✅ Values student knowledge and experience.
✅ Positions students to make sense of the world around them.
✅ Deep 3-D learning doesn't slip away after a test.
