Teach through talk is definitely something I want to focus on next academic year. Especially for the context of the school I teach in. Oracy is such an important life skill and eradicating reluctance to speak is my target. I want to foster that safe space.
The phrase I hate the most "I was only..."
It isn't harmless.
It doesn't excuse the behaviour.
Quite often pupils know exactly what they were doing and what the outcome will be.
Educate, don't, let it slide. I wholeheartedly agree 👇🏻👇🏻
“I was only laughing”
“It’s not that deep”
A phrase we should challenge is “I was only…”
All too often this is dismissed. We should be focusing on sweating the small stuff.
We should clearly explain why the behaviour is unacceptable and link back to our school values. Small moments become big norms if left unchallenged.
The standard you walk past is the standard you accept.
There are lots of children who start to ask ‘how long until the summer holidays?’ around about now.
Many of them are asking because they can’t wait to be off school. Some are asking because of the very opposite. They are losing their safe space for 6 weeks.

1 Trust, 9 schools, honouring 1 legend: Rob Burrow.
A brilliant day at Airedale Academy celebrating his legacy at the Castleford Trust Annual Rob Burrow Varsity Tournament. Proud to stand together, play together, and pay tribute to a man whose courage unites us all.
An amazing way to end our fieldwork Year 10. You were incredibly polite and respectful, so much so I was approached multiple times to be told just that! And there were so many schools at the coast today 🌊📝🌎
Our final geography field trip to the coast took place today, and we couldn’t be prouder! Locals, shop owners and members of the public told our Head of Geography that Airedale pupils were the most polite students they’d encountered. #MannersMatter#TeamAiredale
It was exciting to meet my new Y7 form along with their parents and carers this evening! The Y6 cohort were incredibly mature, and they demonstrated care, ambition and bravery throughout the day. Bring on September!
Thrilled to welcome our new Year 7 cohort, the Class of 2031, to Airedale Academy for their induction day today. We can’t wait to see all they achieve! 🌟
Perfect coast day for our Year 10 geographers measuring groynes today. Calm, clear and ideal for fieldwork. Wrapped it up with fish and chips and an ice cream before heading back 🍦🌊 #fieldwork
