I went to Goa years ago and decided never to return.

For a state that heavily relies on tourism, you'd expect locals to be welcoming. However, the reality is quite the opposite. The unfriendly locals, taxi mafia, overpriced hotels, and uninviting atmosphere are major deterrents.

From the locals' perspective, they blame their hostile attitude on unruly tourist behavior—especially NCR gangs known for drunken driving, fights, disturbing neighborhoods, and making women feel unsafe. While this is absolutely valid, as we see such gangs behaving similarly at nearly all popular tourist spots across India, it doesn’t justify hostility toward all visitors.

Goa’s tourism industry needs a serious overhaul. The police should enforce strict surveillance and adopt a zero-tolerance policy against disruptive tourists. Simultaneously, the administration must dismantle the taxi mafia and curb exploitative practices by hotels and businesses.

Without these reforms, Goa risks losing its status as a top tourist destination.
