STREET BEGGING was one important reason why my restaurant business failed.

Let me explain.

Just because AMALA ROYALE was owned by a young person, we designed it to cater to the taste of young people in the community.

It worked.

It became a hub where young people gathered to discuss football, music and politics after meals.

About a year after we opened, these guys started manning the roads leading to the restaurant, begging from our customers.

There’s one day I will never forget.

I saw a good, regular customer of ours and asked why he had stopped coming.

He simply said:

“Why I go dey come spend 10k for your restaurant and still hold 10k for boys for junction?”

That statement hit me.

We sourced some things locally to empower their mums and dads. Fufu, nylon bags, etc., including labour, were sourced locally.

I supported their carnivals and other community events. I gave them food.

But they didn’t care.

Eventually, we had to close down.

And when we closed, it wasn’t just the end of a restaurant.

It was the end of business for some of them, their parents and their neighbours too. Na the butcher I pity pass, man was making 6k daily preparing goat meat.

We will not renovate government owned schools anymore nor offer to train their teachers. They have the resources to do that and they can fix them if they wish.

For ISEE we will build modular container schools across communities in the South East, hire and train our own teachers, use of own 21st century globally relevant blended curriculum to train the children.

We will also give out scholarships, sponsor sports competitions, support technical education, apprenticeship education, invest in science and innovations.

We must remain independent and laser focused with top level management of our investments.
