After 7 years, I’ve finally rotated off of the Administrative Council (governing board) of the USDA’s Southern Sustainable #Agriculture Research and Education (#SSARE) program. It’s been “good trouble,” ushering in a new crop of #organic and #sustainable#farmers. Thanks to all!
@CeliaMcKee As someone who approves grants (SSARE AC past seven years), I can assure you, 2/3 of submissions are rejected. Sometimes, it’s heartbreaking to turn some down over others. Don’t give up! I always tell folks to try three times for a fair shot.
Enjoyed touring the Mis Abuela #coffee#farm near Mayaguez this morning then meeting #UPR University of Puerto Rico #agriculture students, faculty and administrators in the afternoon.
Yum! Puerto Rican dish: Pigeon peas with rice and chicken (Arroz con Grandules con pollo). #food The “pea” is actually a bean from a tree, am told. Really good!
Left San Juan this morning to visit small mountain villages from Mameyes to Utuado to Adjuntas. Held listening sessions with #farmers, #NGO reps and schoolchildren about their challenges after the devastation of Hurricane Maria. The people here have touched my heart. #SSARE#SARE
Busy day in San Juan PR meeting with small #farmers, #urbanag and #NGO#sustainableag professionals, learning about their post Hurricane Maria needs and explaining #SSARE training, research and education grant opportunities. And then watched sunset on the beach!
Yum! #Mofongo con pollo (deep fried mashed plantains with chicken) in red sauce. Exquisite Puerto Rican dish at La Cueva Del Mar on San Juan, PR. #food
@BeeHeavenFarm @SouthernSARE Seriously, there are some interesting presentations on microbial development of soils, weed management, and such that may be of interest. Plus, Danielle Treadwell @sustainfl and Stuart Weiss #USVI are here. https://t.co/Cruip2jmsA
