Indonesia has kidnapped and threatened Mama Yasinta Moiwend (Mama Sinta), one of the Marind tribe featured in the documentary Pesta Babi, into denying the film and its message.
Pesta Babi, which focuses on the Merauke sugarcane megaproject, reveals a simple fact: that Indonesia is destroying West Papua’s ancestral forest for profit. It is a moderate film, which does not show the real truth – that all West Papuans want freedom and independence instead of colonial ‘development’. Despite this, Indonesia has done everything they can to destroy it.

Wenda, interim president of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), said Pacific leaders must take stronger action as he accused the Indonesian security forces of intensifying violence against West Papuans.
“On behalf of the ULMWP and West Papuan people, I demand that Indonesia’s Associate Membership of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) and Dialogue Partner status in the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) are immediately revoked,” he said in a statement.
Wenda alleged recent incidents in Timika and Intan Jaya included explosives being placed on the bodies of West Papuans killed by Indonesian forces.

It is very sad to see the last remaining glaciers in West Papua now beginning to disappear because of the mining activities of companies like Freeport-McMoRan and Rio Tinto, working together with the government and military who are illegally occupying our country and destroying our ancestral land.
These glaciers are part of our land, our environment, and our history. Their disappearance is not only a warning about climate change, but also a reminder of the environmental destruction taking place in West Papua.
The world must pay attention to the impact that large-scale mining and environmental exploitation are having on the Indigenous people and the natural heritage of West Papua.

South Papua is currently facing a large-scale deforestation project driven by the Indonesian military through palm oil plantations, food estate projects, rice fields, and sugarcane plantation programs.
Across many villages, the Indonesian military and security forces are heavily deployed to protect these projects. The situation on the ground feels like a military operation in the middle of a war zone.
The indigenous peoples of South Papua, especially the Marind, Muyu, and neighbouring tribes and clans, are facing discrimination, intimidation, harassment, and pressure from Indonesian military and security forces.
Evidence of these impacts can be seen in the documentary “Pesta Babi,” which is now available on YouTube.

Tensions have resurfaced in South Papua after indigenous communities from Marga Kamuyen carried out a blockade against the 135-kilometre road construction project in the Nakias area, Merauke. Community members expressed disappointment because the project continues despite previous blockades and while the Merauke Regent’s decree regarding the feasibility of the road construction is still being challenged at the Jayapura State Administrative Court.
The situation intensified further following reports that Indonesian Army (TNI AD) personnel were deployed to the area and requested that the indigenous community reopen the blocked road.

As @JoshKurlantzick documents, the military’s growing role in politics, the economy, and civil society under Prabowo Subianto is a driving factor.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS FROM INTAN JAYA, WEST PAPUA 📍 Bilogai Parish — 17 May 2026
The pastoral team of Bilogai Parish reports that the Indonesian military (TNI) allegedly carried out an aerial bombing near St. Paul’s Church in Nabuni Mbamogo, Intan Jaya, on Sunday, 17 May 2026.
The explosions reportedly caused civilian casualties once again. The victims identified are:
• Pit Pogau • Robert Nabelau • Pius Pogau • Piter Nabelau — seriously injured by bomb shrapnel and currently receiving treatment at Bilogai General Hospital after being evacuated by the pastoral team led by Pastor Yanuarius Yance Yogi.
According to Human Rights Defenders (HRD), two victims have already been evacuated, while others are expected to be evacuated tomorrow.
A church is meant to be a sanctuary of peace, not a target of war. The bombing near a place of worship raises serious humanitarian and human rights concerns and once again shows the suffering faced by civilians in West Papua.
We urgently call on: • The international community • Pacific leaders • Human rights organisations • The United Nations
to pay immediate attention to the escalating violence in Intan Jaya and to push for independent humanitarian and human rights access to West Papua.
