Random aja tiba-tiba kepikiran ini, jadi in one of the Criminal Minds episode, there is one case where they talk about how a Cult could possibly brainwash their “follower.”

So, the target will be given plenty of food containing sugar and electrolytes, but no protein samsek.

Eh kenapa gitu? Karena protein is essential for maintaining normal brain function, and prolonged protein deficiency can potentially affect cognitive performance.

Nah, when this physical deprivation is combined with psychological manipulation, isolation, and repeated conditioning, the target may become more vulnerable to external influence.

This is where psychological conditioning comes into play, potentially influencing how the target thinks, responds, and behaves 🤞🏻

BUUUTT is this actually true tho?

Well, scientifically speaking, there's some truth to the idea, ternyata gak segampang itu :]

According to Laus et al. (2011), protein-calorie malnutrition can affect cognitive functioning, especially when the deficiency is severe or prolonged. Jadi, when someone ngalamin malnutrition dalam jangka waktu lama, their cognitive abilities may be affected. But here's the thing: that doesn't automatically mean they're going to be easier to brainwash.

There's no strong evidence proving that protein deficiency alone can make someone more easier to get brainwashed. 😬

Nah, there's another factor that's actually interesting to discuss, which is coercive control!! Basically, coercive control happens when someone repeatedly uses tactics like intimidation, isolation, and restricting another person's access to resources to control their autonomy.

In a systematic review and meta-analysis, Lohmann et al. (2024) found that exposure to coercive control was associated with mental health problems, including PTSD and depression.

Jadiii kalo kita hubungin sama cults, imagine someone who's isolated from their family, constantly pressured to follow the group's beliefs, and made dependent on the group for their daily needs. Over time, kondisi kayak gini could affect how they evaluate information, make decisions, and respond to pressure. Combined with other forms of deprivation, it may contribute to a situation where psychological manipulation becomes more effective!! :3

Another relevant study is by Coates (2016), which explored the experiences of former members of religious groups and how conformity and commitment can develop within controlled social environments. This suggests that changes in people's beliefs and behaviors can be understood through socialization and social influence, rather than assuming that brainwashing is caused by one specific factor.

Jadi konklusinya apa Abangda… 😮‍💨

I think the idea in Criminal Minds is partially plausible, but scientifically oversimplified. Nutritional deprivation can affect cognitive functioning, while isolation and coercive control can influence a person's psychological well-being and autonomy. However, we can't conclude that feeding someone sugar and electrolytes while withholding protein is an established brainwashing technique.

So basically, making someone physically and psychologically vulnerable is not the same as being able to control their mind. Brainwashing is a much more complex issue that involves psychological, social, and environmental factors, and the specific role of protein deprivation in that process hasn't been established by scientific research… GITOOOOHH.
