Summer Highlight: Congratulations to the five high school students who completed Otay's Path to Water Works High School Internship Program, a three-week pilot program developed in partnership with @SUHSD.

The 11th- and 12th-grade students gained an inside look at career pathways in the vital and growing water and wastewater industry, including finance, engineering, operations, communications, customer service, information technology, safety, human resources, and more.

Through facility tours, presentations, and hands-on activities, students explored the many career roles that help keep our community’s water system running every day.

As the industry prepares for a wave of retirements, the District is committed to helping build the next generation of water professionals by connecting local students with hands-on, real-world learning opportunities.

Otay is proud to receive the District of Distinction Award from the Special District Leadership Foundation, joining a total of 44 special districts across California that have earned this accreditation.

The award builds on the District’s Transparency Certificate, which it received last year, and further reflects its commitment to responsible governance, transparency, accountability, and operational excellence. It has received both awards previously.

Chris Palmer, Senior Public Affairs Field Coordinator with the California Special Districts Association (CSDA), presented the award during the District’s September board of directors meeting.

Otay Water District Celebrates 70 Years of Service to the Community

In 1955, six South Bay community leaders met at Christie’s Restaurant in Chula Vista to discuss ways to import water into the southern part of San Diego County. The shared vision of a plumber, civil engineer, an attorney, a newspaper publisher, and two regional landowners created the framework and secured seed funding for what became the Otay Water District.

The modern @OtayWater District resulted from the merger of two small water districts: Otay Municipal Water District, established in 1956, and the smaller La Presa County Water District. La Presa was formed in 1957 to provide water service to the communities of La Presa and south Spring Valley. At the time, the population served was less than 1,200 people.

The Special District Leadership Foundation (SDLF) presented the Otay Water District with its District of Distinction Accreditation at the California Special Districts Association’s Annual Conference

By completing this program, the District has proven its dedication to transparency, openness, and accessibility to the public and other stakeholders. The program helps districts demonstrate their commitment to responsible governance and operational excellence.

SDLF and the CSDA will recognize the District at its September board meeting.

It is given to California special districts that demonstrate high standards of governance, transparency, and fiscal responsibility.

When life gives you lemons, guess how many!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Otay Water District booth game during this year's Chula Vista Lemon Festival.

Guests were asked to guess how many artificial lemons were inside our 115-ounce water pitcher. The answer was 107 lemons!

Why 107? The number of lemons represented the 107 miles of the District’s recycled water distribution system. The District owns and operates the Ralph W. Chapman Water Recycling Facility in Rancho San Diego, capable of producing up to 1.1 million gallons per day of recycled water for irrigation at golf courses, schools, parks, and open space in areas of eastern Chula Vista.

THE PRIZE WINNERS: Patricia D. and Dona R. both from Chula Vista and Otay customers guessed the closest to 107 lemons. Congratulations!
