@rhodesmoo It really is though. It's like how we have Rust Belt Gothic in the form of Night in the Woods for disaffected rural youth from the Midwest. It's a similar vibe, but for people who grew up in a different setting
@rhodesmoo I think of it as Dr. Phil-core, and I think that a lot of people have come to associate it with the doldrums and the past-and-futurelessness of modern suburban life, whether we realize it or not.
The Backrooms is a sort of "McMansion Gothic" response to these kinds of places
@rhodesmoo You have a bit of both. There is definitely a branch of the backrooms that derives from this kind of uninspired aesthetic that features white/off-white drywall
It's mass-produced, cheap, and soulless in a way that feels vaguely upsetting
