Polite reminder: Treasury told Parliament this week that Kenya’s debt rose by Sh1.2 trillion in one year, from Sh11.81 trillion to Sh13.01 trillion by June 2026.

Yes, Japan (or beloved Singapore) has debt. The difference is that they have something (many things) to show for it: roads, reliable infrastructure, working public services, and industries that create jobs.

Compare the borrowing against the major infrastructure projects in that year:
• Talanta Stadium, Sh45.85B: paid through a separate bond, outside this debt.
• Mau Rironi Summit, Sh184B: a PPP, paid through your tolls.
• James Gichuru–Rironi, Sh20.4 billion: contracted in 2017, so not this one either.

None of them was paid for with this money. So which development did 1.2T go to? Salaries!!? Debt!!?
