STATEMENT.
The Water Engineer of Mbale District, Eng. Wandera Simon Peter, is currently detained at CPS Mbale.

This follows his arrest in connection with GEF: 09/2026 over alleged mismanagement of the Buyobo - Bubyangu Gravity Flow Scheme in Mbale District.

The project was funded to the tune of UGX 2.2 Billion by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda, with the objective of providing clean and free piped water from the Elgon Mountains to rural communities in the area.

It is regrettable that all connected public taps are dry, despite the massive investment intended to serve the people.

All contractors are hereby put on notice to desist from substandard work. Government projects must meet the required standards and deliver real value to Ugandans.

As a doctor working in Karamoja, I get to deal with the harsh reality of not seeing a patient again, even when they need to be seen every month.

The Patient clearly tells me, ‘There’s no way I’m coming back for review. Where will I get the money? I sold everything to be able to come.’ And I know they’re telling the truth.

Sometimes I wish my patients were exempted from having chronic illnesses and eye conditions because it’s basically a blindness sentence, and a death sentence.

Unfortunately, life doesn’t operate that way. Now I’m forced to sometimes trade eye surgery for blood pressure control. Eye surgery for 1 month of blood sugar control. It’s a tough situation.

I still remember the first day of my orientation as an intern doctor so vividly.

The interns coordinator told us these words: ‘AS AN INTERN DOCTOR, YOU GO FOR A SHORT CALL AT YOUR OWN RISK.’

Who can forget these words. Imagine the immense responsibility!

It haunted me. And truthfully, everytime I went for a short call, I would be praying that nothing happens to any patient in my short absentia.

See, if you’re going to put someone’s child, girlfriend, boyfriend, mother, father, husband, or wife under such immense pressure, you had better pay them!

One of the most painful things in medical practice is this: you know the patient’s problem. You know how to solve them, but you cannot because of the challenges we all know. To crown it all, the patient cannot afford to go where you want them to go and access those services.

This is the reason I’m thinking about starting a foundation, a Gladys Foundation that will be patient centered, enabling poor patients access services they can’t afford.

That’s the dream for now. Let me keep dreaming and modifying and polishing . Don’t discourage me.

My schedules are quite basic.

The week days go like this:

Morning to 5:00pm- work

5:30-6:30 pm - 5km jog

6:35 pm - 7:00 pm - shower, dinner

7:05 pm - 7:15 pm - Kiswahili lessons

7: 20 pm - 8pm - Guitar lessons

8: 05 pm - 8:30 pm - Kjong lessons

In between everything, there are phone calls, and social media 😊

I want to add dance lessons but I don’t know where to fix it.

8:45 pm - sleep

Weekends are more flexible- cooking for the week, house chores, laundry, watching football, research, prayer podcasts, online fellowship, church etc…..

H.E. the President will next week preside over the commissioning of the Yaobai Cement Uganda state-of-the-art cement and clinker factory in Moroto, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s industrialisation journey.

Valued at over USD 300 million, this strategic investment stands among the largest industrial projects in Northern Uganda and signals growing investor confidence in the Karamoja sub-region.

The facility, with a Phase I production capacity of over 6,000 tonnes of clinker per day, is expected to substantially boost domestic manufacturing capacity.

The project is set to reduce Uganda’s reliance on imported clinker by more than 2.5 million tonnes annually, strengthening supply chains and supporting the country’s expanding construction sector.

Increased local production is also expected to enhance price stability and improve accessibility of cement across the region.

Beyond industrial output, the factory is already catalysing socio-economic transformation in Karamoja, creating jobs, stimulating local enterprise, and contributing to improved household incomes.

The commissioning ceremony will bring together regional leaders, investors, government officials, private sector actors, and cultural institutions, reflecting a shared commitment to inclusive growth and regional development.

This milestone highlights Karamoja’s steady transition into a viable investment destination, positioning the sub-region as an emerging pillar in Uganda’s broader economic transformation agenda.
