@MattSchirm_CAA Stories like this all over the place Shirm. WEe both remember a certain D3 RB who never started in hs bc his team had D1 players at his position. That guy was a grinder through D3, Arena ball, Europe and then got his chance and played several years in the NFL.
Common story:
Kid loves baseball. Decides to quit other sports & specialize in 8th grade.
Plays spring ball, summer travel ball, & fall ball. Private lessons over the winter. Ends up swinging/throwing 12 months straight.
Does this for 4 years.
48 months straight of the same back/arm stress.
And we wonder why so many HS players have Pars stress fractures and torn UCLs.
Now apply this to volleyball, golf, basketball, etc. We are breaking our kidsโ bodies in pursuit of scholarships.
Athletes need an offseason. Especially when theyโre 15.
@GPinTN1@ScottDochterman Highly likely Dolph and Bobby didnt want the media reporting this. How awkward would that have been for Leafield, w/advertising $$ involved, having their play-by-play announcer in a public fued with the head coach. Makes the program look even more dysfunctional than it was.
@MegRemSoftball Love doing this in front toss and having the player check their hands (dropping?), backside foot/knee (collapsing or stacked?) and posture (chest over plate?).
Indoor Training Facilities...
Personally I've trained in, rented from, been part owner and owned a facility for the last 20ish years. Anyone who has been a part of the financial side understands the difficulties of it. Here's a list of things facility owners have to manage to keep it looking professional and the doors open...
1. Rent. No matter the time of year, rent is always there (just like your home mortgage). When the weather is uncomfortable, the phone rings but when it's great to be outside, revenue slows.
2. Equipment. From baseballโs/softball's to turf to seating to batting tees to netting, wear and tear is real especially in busy facilities filled with the public. With this in mind facility use rates should be at a figure to help cover this and set money aside for future repair and replacement.
3. Cleaning. For those that care, keeping the place clean is always on their mind and is a task on its own. Kids tend to be messy, lost and found is often over flowing, dust builds and bathrooms left unattended can get nasty pretty quick.
4. Schedule. During the busy months keeping everyone on schedule is a must. Sometimes renters lose track of time but there needs to be someone on site to keep the ball rolling.
5. Fee changes. It's never comfortable but with rent increases by landlords, increases in utility bills, insurance rates or maybe a new high end product/service offered, fee changes are often necessary. Owners tend to lose customers at these moments but it's a part of business.
With all this said, facility owners have to be mentally ready to take that all on. They must have many areas of revenue generating services (people renting space alone will rarely be enough) throughout the year to not get caught in the trap of the slow months. They must have good people skills and be trustworthy. They must be organized and they have to be creative.
So the next time you walk into one of these amazing facilities out there, know there is someone/a family/a staff who has put a lot of time and effort into making that place what it is. Please respect the space, clean up after yourself and spread the word.
@geoffschwartz While Gronowski is certainly an improvement for Iowa QB play, we still fall short with being able to execute the game changing deep throws in this offense. If we want to be 10-2 or better with a schedule like we have this year year, next year, etc., QB play must be above MG.
@stoolpresidente Assume you will fly into one of the FBOs in Cedar Rapids. You gotta try Need Pizza in downtown Cedar Rapids. Best New Haven style around here. Also, Pagliais Pizza in Iowa City is great brick oven. Airliner has NY thin and Wig and Pen is decent tavern.
@Hassel_Chris Listen, I get what you're saying. Win @ home/night vs. name brand of PSU. That said, the '23 win against Illinois at home was bigger, imho, given those circumstances (Brian getting "fired", Kirk vs. Beth, QB/offense debacle, final B1G West title).
