Join us on 1 Nov for a talk on the ‘Military & Democracy in India & Pakistan’ with @sondhi_aditya Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India and author of the book Poles Apart. He will be in conversation with @iamthedrifter Senior Fellow, Dept of War Studies, King’s College London
Poles Apart investigates the roles of the military in India & Pakistan, to deduce their influences on democracy in the two nations. It highlights the outcomes of military coups on democracy in Pakistan, as well as scenarios in India when the army could have been led astray.
The film sheds light on his journey as an activist, navigating state repression, wrongful framing, unjust imprisonment, and his ongoing fight for justice.

Drawing on bureaucratic documents, propaganda material, memoirs, literary sources, & oral interviews in English/ Urdu/ Kashmiri, Kanjwal examines the intentions, tensions, & unintended consequences of Bakshi's state-building policies in the context of India's colonial occupation.
The Oxford South Asian Society, in collaboration with @OxfordSAIH, is organising a discussion on the book ‘Colonising Kashmir: State-building under Indian Occupation’ by Hafsa Kanjwal, Lafayette College.
In this book, Hafsa Kanjwal interrogates how Kashmir was made "integral" to India through a study of the decade long rule (1953-1963) of Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, the second Prime Minister of the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
