In 1941, Rezah Shah Pahlavi the the king of Iran was forced by Britain and the Soviet Union to abdicate his throne and was later exiled to South Africa in 1942 where he was given a taste of the country’s racism.

Before arriving in South Africa, Rezah Shah first sailed to India, but the British who controlled India refused to allow him to disembark or remain on Indian soil.

He was redirected across the Indian Ocean to Mauritius where he was housed in a three-story villa furnished by the governor’s wife. Among the items provided was a bed that had once belonged to one of Napoleon’s generals. Reza Shah refused to use it, preferring to sleep on a small rug on the floor.

By early 1942, the former king’s health was deteriorating and the British feared he might die on the island, and his son pressed them to move his father somewhere with better medical facilities and schooling for his brothers.

In May 1942, Reza Shah arrived in Durban, South Africa, but was unhappy with the low-altitude, coastal environment and asked to move to Johannesburg. South African Prime Minister Jan Smuts agreed to let him stay in Johannesburg as a “distinguished visitor.”

In Johannesburg, Reza Shah found the climate more agreeable. However, finding a suitable residence for him and his entourage proved difficult because local segregation laws prohibited the sale or rental of property to non-White groups referred to as “Asiatics” or “Coloured Persons” in most reserved areas of Johannesburg.

According to the book “Pahlavi Iran’s Relations with Africa”, when Reza Shah landed in Joburg, there were some fears from the British that the Pahlavi family would be uncomfortable “due to the deeply engrained racism in South African society”. One British diplomat wrote that this was almost inevitable since “Unfortunately, they are a rather dark-skinned family”.

Historical records show that even before his arrival, British handlers were anxious about how this royal family would be received due to entrenched local prejudices, with diplomats privately noting concerns over their non-European racial status in South African society.

Ben Cockburn, the British Political Secretary to the High Commissioner wrote that
“The anti-Asiatic clauses ruled out practically all the suitable housing in the Transvaal and elsewhere” and that after a succession of temporary accommodations “I think... [he] is sick to death of looking for houses”.

Ultimately, British officials secured a 12-month lease on a grand, secluded residence located at 41 Young Avenue in the Mountain View/Upper Houghton area of Johannesburg.

The property featured a Cape Dutch-style residence set on five acres of walled gardens, offering the family privacy and space. This specific area was chosen because it fell outside the strict geographic boundaries of South Africa’s Gold Law which explicitly barred non-Whites from buying or leasing property in reserved municipal zones.

Despite escaping the Gold Law, the house’s private title deed still contained restrictive anti-Asian covenants prohibiting leases to “Asiatics” or non-Whites. British handlers quietly ignored these property deeds to house the former monarch, constantly fearing a local neighbour might request an eviction order.

Still, unlike with Mauritius, Reza Shah was was impressed by Johannesburg’s wide avenues and multistorey buildings. He enjoyed walking through the city, visiting the zoo, Lake’s musical fountain, and watching the steady flow of people getting on and off trains.

Yet, members of his family visiting him in Johannesburg noted that the city’s beauty was deeply marred by rigid segregation enforcing separate access to restaurants, theatres, parks and sidewalks.

Reza Shah’s time in Johannesburg demonstrated that South Africa’s strong racial barriers spared neither royalty nor ordinary people.

If a former king required intervention simply to secure a home because he was considered too dark, it underscored how deeply institutionalised racial discrimination had already become, years before Apartheid.

So, although Reza Shah found Johannesburg more pleasant than his previous places of exile, his stay exposed South African society: a modern, thriving place whose beauty and hospitality are overshadowed by laws and prejudices that classify and restrict people according to race.

Many Africans are proud of Ethiopia for being the only African nation that was never colonised.

However, they rarely say anything about how when Ethiopia defeated European colonial invaders at the Battle of Adwa in 1896, the Ethiopian army was actually marching under the banner of the Christian Orthodox Church.

This was not even a result of modern European colonisation either, as Ethiopia converted to Christianity 1200 years before transatlantic slavery and 1500 years before Africa’s colonisation, around the same time the Roman Empire was only just beginning to tolerate the faith.
In fact, Coptic Christianity in Ethiopia and ancient Egypt developed entirely independently of European colonial influence.

The Nubian kingdoms of Sudan converted to Christianity in the 6th century AD, influenced by Egyptian Coptic and Ethiopian Christian missionaries. The resulting Nubian Christianity persisted for nearly 1000 years, only gradually giving way to Islam after the 13th-14th centuries.

It was actually Islam that prevented Ethiopia and Egypt from spreading Christianity across the Sahel and into West Africa.

It’s true that Western/Protestant Christianity spread through colonial missionary activity in Sub-Saharan Africa. In places like Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, the modern religious landscape was shaped by European missionaries and colonial institutions. But that doesn’t take away from 1500 years of indigenous African Christianity.

So, while Christianity is not originally African, it’s also not originally European, having originated in the Levant in West Asia. In fact, large parts of Africa were Christian before many parts of northern and eastern Europe were.

So, when we focus on just one screenshot of Christianity’s spread by European colonisers as the whole story, it erases a rich chapter of African history while attempting to defend it.

The bigger picture is that there was a continuous tradition of African Christianity that existed for centuries as an African phenomenon, completely independent of Europe.
