⚡🌍 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 — 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘂𝗽.
The emerging 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 linked to the war in the Middle East is yet another reminder of the risks of failing to diversify energy sources. At the same time, devastating storms — like the one that recently caused major losses in Portugal, my home country — show clearly that ignoring climate change is not an option.
🇪🇬 These realities framed many of the conversations in Cairo during the 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗔 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 Parliamentarians for Climate (𝗣𝟰𝗖), organized by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗗𝗶𝗠𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 and 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲. A word of gratitude to Hon. Ibtissame Azzaoui for her inspirational leadership and invitation.
Across discussions with parliamentarians, experts, and civil society from the 𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗔 region, Africa, and Europe, one message stood out:
🧭 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.
Climate resilience, energy security, and public health are deeply interconnected. Addressing them effectively will require smarter governance, responsible use of emerging technologies like AI, stronger health and data systems, and genuine engagement with citizens and science.
🤝 Encouraging conversations — but the moment calls for more than dialogue.
𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁.
