Here at Combat Stress, psychological therapy plays a key role in helping veterans recover from military trauma, but what does a psychologist actually do?
Psychologists aim to reduce distress and promote psychological wellbeing by helping people to develop a more in-depth understanding of their thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and to learn healthy and effective ways to cope with life’s challenges. They work directly with individuals or in groups. At Combat Stress, our psychologists provide trauma-focused therapy to enable veterans to process traumatic events and support them to move forward on their journey to recovery.

Some veterans with complex mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may find it difficult to recognise their symptoms and difficulties as responses to trauma.
We know from our own research that providing knowledge about PTSD helps veterans make sense of their difficulties and gather their own understanding of the condition throughout their treatment journey.
At Combat Stress, our expert clinicians implement psychoeducation at the beginning of a veteran’s treatment to help them develop understanding of their condition, including symptoms, effects and treatment options. This knowledge acts as a helpful framework where veterans can understand their difficulties, enabling them to gain confidence and control of their symptoms, and resulting in better outcomes for recovery.
