You would think after a quarter century of neocon propaganda and failure we would be rid of it, but you're wrong.

Bari Weiss says, "With ongoing wars around the world from Eastern Europe to the Middle East, and more threatening to break out any day, it is more urgent than ever that we clarify our country’s role on the world stage."

And here's the first question she poses in an attempt to "clarify":

"Does the United States still possess the will to protect our allies and defend the values of liberal democracy?"

Is that how you, dear reader, or indeed any remotely attentive person, would pose the issue at hand?

First, what does she mean by "still"? How many US government interventions on behalf of extremely illiberal regimes do we have to cite in order to get rid of this fairy tale once and for all?

Second, the question is posed in such a way that to answer in the negative is to appear to succumb to some kind of moral failing.

But one can have very good reasons for not wanting further wars that indeed may be publicly justified by Bari Weiss-style propaganda, but are in fact the usual jockeying for imperial positioning and lining the pockets of profiteers.

Maybe we've noticed that none of these damn things ever turn out the way they were promised to us, including how much they are supposed to cost.

Maybe we've noticed that they involve massive and pointless loss of life, on behalf of causes that have absolutely nothing to do with our well-being as Americans.

And maybe we've noticed that the absolute worst voices in our society are constantly pushing and propagandizing for these damn things.

We may, finally, have come to the conclusion that the money we spend supposedly on defending liberal democracy, whatever that's supposed to mean, would be better spent in the prosaic pursuit of improving the lives of the people who live in this country.
