10 Tips for Optimising Energy & Improving Mood with IBD:
1. Manage your IBD: Monitor & keep inflammation under control. Get calprotectin tested & discuss with your team if unsure.
2. Treat anaemia: Check haemoglobin levels & address any deficiencies.
3. Check vitamins/minerals: Get B12, folate, ferritin & vitamin D levels checked yearly & treat if low.
4. Revise your diet: Consider a Mediterranean-style diet if tolerated. Limit sugar & processed foods.
5. Optimise sleep: Get adequate, quality sleep to regulate energy & mood.
6. Exercise in daylight: If possible, get some daylight exercise to boost energy & mood.
7. Screen for anxiety/depression: If feeling low, get screened.
8. Adjust caffeine: Wait 60 mins after waking for first caffeine to avoid afternoon crashes; avoid in the afternoon to prevent insomnia.
9. Try non-sleep deep rest: Incorporate yoga nidra, meditation etc to re-energise.
10. Practice self-care: Prioritise taking care of yourself. Making routine changes can greatly improve energy & mood.
