The most powerful man of the land gushed over the Philippines' newest source of pride during an "invented" reception that highlighted Filipino pride, hard work, and solidarity.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was grinning ear to ear as he welcomed tennis icon Alex Eala at Malacañang on Monday to recognize her feat as the first Filipino to win during the third round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.

The Chief Executive could not hide his excitement when he praised Eala for making Filipinos proud and for reminding them that they belong to a "great race."

"I'm a fan, so I'm gushing. Okay, I'm sorry. I'm a real fan of yours. And one day, I hope I will get the opportunity to watch you even if it's not just a Grand Slam. Even if it's a tournament," Marcos said.

The President described Eala as a "true fighter" and a "true champion" and praised her for being proud of her race.

"The entire Filipino nation is behind you. The entire Filipino nation has come to love you because of your sweetness and grace. In the face of difficulty, in the face of, well, maybe even sometimes adversity," Marcos said.

"The way that you can keep your concentration, the way that you can keep your commitment. And that, I think, is one of the qualities that you have. That is why you have been so successful."
