40 year career with Shell companies. Knows a bit about Energy, cricket and modern history. Writes a lot, not all of it bollocks. Proud European.

@chrisdeerin A war that directly and immediately affects UK citizens can only be a Nuclear war. And, frankly, having a cupboard full of Buxton Water ain’t going to help you survive that.

Me in Dhaka ten years ago. Test Match finished early (easy win for Bangladesh ) so I became a tourist. Wonderful place.

On Sally Rooney.

There are two people here. The first is Sally Rooney the novelist. She is talented, writes good stories, creates interesting often memorable characters and steers well clear of anything remotely political.

The second is Sally Rooney the political activist. She is strong and uncompromising in her opinions and steers clear of anything remotely literary.

You need to see her in this way.

@Frances_Coppola The key is describing her as “Nigerian” which is used abusively and in the context irrelevantly. Similarly “scammer” implies rather more than one silly, but not over venal event.

@Frances_Coppola The Arabs who vote ARE Israelis, otherwise they wouldn’t have a vote.

Worth correcting I think @GovMikeHuckabee

Olukemi Olufunto Adegoke was born to Nigerian parents in 1980 in London. Her mother’s decision to relocate briefly to London for the birth had the benefit of giving Kemi British nationality automatically. (The law at that time, subsequently changed, though not retrospectively)

From her birth to the age of 16 she lived with her Nigerian parents in Lagos. She grew up in a substantially African culture, though a fairly privileged one as her parents were middle class professionals.

Kemi has dual nationality but does not use her Nigerian nationality in any way. So far as is known her mother only has Nigerian nationality as did her late father.

Kemi does not deny or denigrate her heritage in any way. But she also rarely talks about it. Her culture , she insists, is British - presumably inculcated by her arrival in Britain in 1996 and her subsequent education and work here. She is, of course, perfectly entitled to make this choice.

@bhogleharsha Sharma faced 38 balls and hit more than half of them for boundaries (9 fours and 11 sixes). Entertaining no doubt but emphatically not for me. Prefer cricket.

@RicFinlay Hobbs, opening, was stumped in successive Test matches in 1926 (not 1925).

@Ben_Wisden Or just “batsman” as we used to say.

Robert Crampton: “She poses as the plucky thwarted democrat, the people’s tribune cut down by unelected bureaucrats, bankers and boffins. It won’t wash. Truss didn’t win a general election. She had no mandate for her heedless mad dash for growth, other than that provided by 81,000 clueless Conservative Party members.” 😂

@SketchesbyBoze And to think she never used the word “iconic”. Extraordinary.
