Like Guy Ritchie's ultra-woke "MobLand," "The Westies" is also about Irish mobsters - this time in 1980s New York City.

What makes it light-years better?

No castrating girlbosses attached to every male lead.

No race-swapped Irish mobsters, lesbian enforcers or family members.

Everyone in this show is appropriately white and male, as the story demands.

J.K. Simmons is exactly the kind of commanding screen presence you'd expect as mob boss Eamon Sweeney, while Titus Welliver simmers as a dirty cop turned double agent.

The production design is first-rate.

1980s Hell's Kitchen feels authentic, dirty, and lived in.

On the downside, there is the race-and-gender-swapped Black female FBI task force leader (in the 1980s!)

To her credit, she isn't bad and doesn't appear very much - but the race-swap moment is when you realize you can't trust everything the story is telling you.

If you go in expecting "The Sopranos," you'll probably be disappointed.

A few scenes look like outtakes from a Tullamore D.E.W. commercial.

And the parade of Irish and Italian stereotypes, racist epithets, and Hollywood clichés just keeps coming.

Still, if you want a slow-burn Irish mob drama with strong performances and plenty of room to grow, "The Westies" is worth your time...

...SO FAR.

My aunt is the legendary singer Patti LaBelle.

She has performed our National Anthem FOUR different times at major national sporting events.

Not once did she ever sing the Black National Anthem.

She ALWAYS performed "The Star-Spangled Banner."

And tomorrow, she will do it again at the 2026 MLB All-Star Game.

Why?

Because she will be singing to EVERY AMERICAN - not just some of us.

She will be using her beautiful, powerful voice to bring us TOGETHER - not tear us apart.

And I like to think that’s because President Trump is in office and his message is AMERICA FIRST.

Unlike the Democrats who constantly use race to divide us, he reminds us:

We are ONE country.

We have ONE national anthem.

And it belongs to ALL OF US.

So while the NFL platforms the OTHER song at the Super Bowl...

...MLB will celebrate baseball's place in the DNA of OUR COUNTRY by giving us the REAL ANTHEM.
