Do you remember Donald Trump’s tweet that led South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to defend South Africa’s sovereignty?

His sharp remarks reminded some of former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe, who told a former British prime minister: “[Tony] Blair, keep your England and let me keep my Zimbabwe.”

Niger has formally awarded the Somair uranium mine, previously operated by French nuclear group Orano, to its state mining company Sopamin, completing the nationalisation of one of the country’s main uranium assets. The military government announced the move in a televised statement, saying the decision was taken in full sovereignty after accusing Orano of irresponsible, illegal and unfair behaviour, and citing the expiration of the mine’s operating agreement in December 2023. Orano held a 63 percent stake in Somair while Sopamin held 37 percent, but authorities said Orano had taken about 86.3 percent of production between 1971 and 2024. The government also pointed to France’s open hostility since the July 2023 coup, and to Orano’s withdrawal of French staff, IT disconnect and halted production as justification for the takeover.

The Somair mine in the Arlit region of northern Niger has been a key supplier of uranium to France’s nuclear industry for decades, and Niger accounts for about 5 percent of global uranium output. The nationalisation follows the earlier revocation of Orano’s license at the larger Imouraren project and fits a broader Sahel trend where Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are reclaiming control over gold, oil and uranium assets. In February Niger also announced it would return 95,000 tons of yellowcake stockpiled from Somair to Orano, while saying all uranium produced after nationalisation remains Niger’s property. Orano has filed arbitration and warned of legal action, but the junta says the move will ensure healthier management and that mineral wealth benefits Nigeriens, as it also sets up new state firms to manage uranium and gold and seeks closer ties with partners outside France.

Ing. Dr Ken Ashigbey has said an investigation found that some assemblies were visiting galamsey sites to collect fees from illegal miners, effectively facilitating the crime.

He stressed that this practice makes the officials complicit, as Ghana's mining laws criminalise not only mining without a permit, but also actions that aid or promote illegal operations.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has criticised the global financial system, saying high borrowing costs and existing economic structures are holding back the Global South.

Speaking in Moscow alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Ablakwa called for UN reform, debt relief, restitution of African artefacts and greater control over Africa’s natural resources.

His message: the Global South needs a bigger voice in shaping the rules of the international system.

We remember the 500 years of t*rror perpetrated against Africa by the West, the greatness in us that the West tried so desperately to erase, and the arrogant hypocrisy of the West today, as it refuses to take any real accountability, or make any real amends, for its crimes, yet continues to advertise itself as a “partner” of Africa.

We stand with those among us who fight for, and those around the world who support, our sovereign development.

The Transatlantic Slave Trade saw the kidnapping of some 12 and 20 million Africans from the Motherland by European criminals. Of those kidnapped, 20% would not survive the long, hellish voyage to the West. Those who did would be trafficked across the Western Hemisphere, and worked to death in order to build the West’s economies.
