If we create an environment that encourages them to be active but allow them choice and a voice on how they do it….. they will do the rest.
If we focus on play….. the development will take care of itself !!!
Happy National #Playday !!
Practicing what I'm preaching.
Last week I had the opportunity to speak at the National Sports & Physical Activity Convention on allowing children to play and not specialise in sports at too early and age.
Thread
acquired a proficient level of FMS.
Play is key for children to develop their FMS which in turn allows them to develop more technically difficult SSS.
Today I got to practice what I preached at a fantastically well ran and well
attended event in Belfast hosted by PlayBoard NI
Children controlling the content of their own play for their own reasons…. Giving children the time, space and permission to play freely is the key, they will do the rest.
Developing a good level fundamental movement skills (FMS) such as running, jumping, catching, throwing, kicking etc. is a necessity for children if they are to develop better sport specific skills (SSS)
All too often sports coaches focus on developing SSS before children have
Hundreds of children and adults enjoying the free activities provided.
What started out as this (1st few photos) turned into this (last few photos) !! An obstacle course designed and enjoyed by the children themselves.
Todays play sessions invitations to play included; Crawl gates, hurdles, hula hoops, balls, bean bags, parachute, planks, tyres and creates among others. No rules, no drills, no queues ! Just free play and children controlling the content of their own play. (1/2)
