In a way, Big locked Carrie into that "fun/fringe" category on night one when those condoms spilled on the street. It took him six seasons, a heart procedure, and a trip to Paris to finally realize that the girl he categorized as "just for fun" was actually the only woman who truly understood him.

Later in the episode, they meet again at a club, and Carrie is talking very openly about sex, asking him if he’s ever been in love. Big’s response to her is incredibly smooth, detached, and highly flirtatious, but not necessarily respectful in a "I want to take you home to mother" way. He treats her like a woman who is purely "down for a good time," which aligns perfectly with his character—a man who compartmentalizes women into "good on paper" (classy, society brunettes like his ex-wife Barbara or later, Natasha) and "fun for now" (Carrie).

By looking at her through that initial, cynical lens, Big likely categorized Carrie as a fun, zero-strings-attached distraction. It explains why he was so comfortable being incredibly forward with her right away, yet spent the first few seasons absolutely panicked at the thought of integrating her into his real, high-society life.

He didn't realize until much later that the "only fun" girl was the one he’d actually end up falling for.
