We begin the day in silence because God should have the first word. We end the day in silence because God should have the last word.
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer 🙏🏽
Perhaps more painful than the attacks of those who oppose us is the silence of those we trusted to defend us.
Both sources of pain call us to dependence on the grace of God, the one who declares the final word as to who we are. And God’s word about us is good.
“Do you remember your favorite teachers? They were probably the ones who wanted to learn your name; who had a warm smile; who made you feel that they were glad to be there to help you learn. No matter how old or young we are,we learn best from people who care about us.”
A church culture that is against ordaining women, yet expects pastors' wives to serve practically full-time in ministry without any additional renumeration...
...is exploiting women for free pastoral care.
Ordain and pay women if you expect them to do pastoral-level work.
Some fun news:
I enjoy an iced Dutch Bros drink on the regular.
I recently invited one of the baristas to church.
Last Sunday she and her boyfriend attended worship. Both came to faith in Jesus.
Saw her this morning and she is excited.
The gospel is still good news, y’all.
Proclaiming faith in Jesus without aligning with the way of Jesus is just another way to deny Jesus.
When faith in Jesus doesn’t lead to putting on Christ, our “faith” turns into a strategy to secure power, eliminate enemies, and avoid a cross-shaped life.
When compassion becomes suspect, viewed as an expression of weakness or lack of conviction, we lose touch with the heart of Jesus.
Jesus was fully aware of the sin and brokenness embodied by the crowds, but he always looked at them with compassion.
Go and do likewise.
Our practice of reading Scripture should never lead us to arrogance, superiority, or judgment, but rather a deeper spirit of love, grace, and humility.
If reading the Bible does not lead us to look more like Jesus, who is the very Word of God, then we have missed the point.
