Last year around 48,300 people were released from prison. 9% of those releases followed consideration by the Parole Board, with the remaining 91% released automatically from custody without involvement of the Parole Board.
As the new BBC series of Parole proceeds, we will be posting some key facts about the Parole Board so that people can better understand the work that we do.
The proportion of prisoners released after Parole Board reviews is approximately 25%. This means that in three quarters of parole reviews the Board decides that it is necessary for the protection of the public that the prisoner remain in custody.
