Located on the southeast corner of Central Park, the Pasadena Lawn Bowling Club (275 S. Raymond Ave.) is widely regarded as the birthplace of lawn bowling in Southern California. The club emerged at a time when Pasadena had become a favored winter destination for visitors from colder regions, particularly Canada and the United Kingdom, many of whom brought with them a strong tradition of the sport. A group of local enthusiasts successfully petitioned the City Board of Directors to establish a green in Central Park, and by 1920 construction of the south green was underway. The club was formally dedicated on June 30, 1921, with music provided by the Pasadena Fire Department Band and the Scottish Kiltie Bagpipe Band. As membership grew, so did the need for a permanent clubhouse. Noted Pasadena architect Wallace Neff donated the plans, and construction began in 1927, followed by an expansion in 1930. The clubhouse was built entirely through community contributions at a cost of $4,000 and subsequently deeded to the city. Free lessons are offered on Saturday mornings. The One Arroyo Foundation, in partnership with the City of Pasadena and RJM Design Group, is launching a new community planning initiative to restore and reimagine a promontory along the Lower Arroyo Seco, home to the Emma Dickinson Bird Sanctuary, one of Pasadena's historic landmarks. As the project enters its first phase of planning and design, community members are invited to help shape the future of the site by participating in a public survey and attending community workshops this August.
The One Arroyo Overlook Project will address these challenges through a thoughtful restoration that balances historic preservation, environmental stewardship, and public access. The long-term vision includes:
• Restoration of the Emma Dickinson Bird Sanctuary, including the memorial fountain, Batchelder tile, benches, and stairways
• Stabilization and repair of historic stone retaining walls
• Improved accessibility and pedestrian safety
• Construction of a new trail connection linking the overlook to the Lower Arroyo trail system
• Expansion of native habitat to support birds, pollinators, and the Arroyo ecosystem
• Development of a comprehensive Park Site Master Plan to guide future implementation
