“Tourism taxes have their place, but they're typically used to suppress demand in destinations that are overrun – the exact opposite of our situation,” “We need to be driving visitor numbers up, not pricing people out.”

The key to a #VATCUT is for our sector is the #Hospitality industry uniting under one key campaign, I've been pushing for this for months, indeed when you think back to it actually for years.
You can see my parliamentary statement from @RosieDuffield1's #HospitalityRoundtable at the House of Commons below calling (again!) for a united industry.
I believe that industry has now united behind @ChefTomKerridge and the https://t.co/LvLTRb4LOk campaign and it needed celebrity chefs and the major trade bodies to do it.
This is a pivotal moment for the sector and everyone MUST support it - its not a matter of if, but when and united we stand, divided we fall.

Hospitality has so much potential - to create jobs, to drive high street regeneration and economic growth. But it is held back by tax - the most highly taxed sector of the economy
Now the sector is united that #VATsTheProblem. A new sector-wide campaign, spearheaded by Tom Kerridge, is calling for hospitality VAT to be reduced from 20% to 10% - the single biggest lever the Government can pull to unleash potential. So let’s make the Sunmer’s VAT cut the start. Sign the petition today 👇

A real pleasure to host the @UKHofficial drop-in in Parliament today.
Over 2000 jobs in South Shields are in the Hospitality Industry and local businesses contribute £40m to the UK economy. 🏨🍻🍟
A Tourism Tax would seriously undermine our town. ❌

"The local pub, the local shop... is kept afloat by the power of tourism".
@TomGiffard calls for the new Welsh Government to reduce the 182-day rule on holiday lets and look again at the visitor levy.

21 visitor economy organisations have written to @RachelReevesMP this week on the Great British Summer Savings Scheme.
Two asks before the SI is laid:
Apply the 5% relief at point of purchase, not consumption
Don't leave charitable attractions behind

Scotland’s self-catering sector warns of economic harm amid regulatory overload
Commissioned by the Association of Scottish Self-Caterers (ASSC) and prepared by one of the UK’s leading tourism research centres, Scottish self-catering industry:
Regulatory impact and strategic outlook for policymakers, concludes that the sector is experiencing one of the most significant periods of regulatory intervention in the history of Scotland’s visitor economy – and that the evidence underpinning that intervention is simply not holding up.

In Parliament @JWhittingdale MP asked why the hospitality sector is being hit with another tax.
“These business are making it clear that if there are any further increases, they will simply not survive.”
This is the wrong policy and at the worst time. Gov’t must scrap the tax.

There was no black market until poorly introduced legislation in 2022 created the conditions for a blossoming of less safe & now clearly illegal venues that go totally unpoliced by authorities that lack the resources, instead axing licensed premises to be seen to 'act'. #SaveSC
The holiday tax is just VAT.
Where Europe gives hospitality a VAT cut because the tax burden is so high for the sector, here in the UK we’re gonna whack it up.
A single tax on community businesses.
"When hospitality fires on all cylinders, then the economy fires on all cylinders too" - @UKHospKate
A VAT cut is the "quickest and easiest way" to tackle the cost of living and get the economy moving, our Chair Kate Nicholls, speaks to @LBCNews.
The difference between Reform and Plaid is becoming more apparent by the day: Solutions vs nice words.
Reform's @joemartin1066 on tourism:
✅ Scrap tourism levy
✅ Lower 182 day rule for holiday lets
✅ Cut taxes on hospitality
✅ Fix transport (M4 relief road, scrap 20mph)
Plaid's response:
"I think it's important to say that Plaid Cymru do recognise the importance of the tourism industry to Wales"
Which one sounds like a competent government to you?
Jobs collapse well underway as predicted. Especially hospitality & young people.
It’s part govt policy, part Iran war.
But govt’s job is to solve external problems not exacerbate them.
This is the context for the #holidaytax. Drop that, cut #VAT.

It is quite honestly a struggle to think of a single piece of Scottish legislation which hasn't come with unintended consequences. STL licencing joins an ever growing list #SaveSC
Our 5 asks to @CommonsCMS:
Publish the Visitor Economy Strategy
Cut hospitality VAT to 10%
No England tourist tax — assess first
Properly fund @VisitBritain (£20:£1 ROI)
Invest in the workforce

Tourism in Wales could suffer £359m hit from Visitor Levy, lobby group claims https://t.co/mA1r68LVUQ - difficult to challenge. Policy makers have already been warned it will have negative impacts but are still pursuing it - it’s not them that carry the liability though.
It doesn't matter what fancy words they use to describe it, this is just another TAX.
...a tax on tourism and in fact all types of overnight stays, whether leisure, business or visiting friends & relatives.
Only Labour can believe the way to 'help' a sector is to tax it more!

Parliamentary recess gives me the opportunity to spend even more time out across the constituency - meeting the incredible organisations, volunteers and residents who make our town so special.

@BBCNews headline leading on 'tourism tax'. Wonder how many people will realise it will be for ALL overnight stays for everyone (not just overseas visitors as some MPs seem to think). And we already have a very high rate of VAT on accommodation.
